Best Management Practices Selection

Many, if not the majority of SWPPP implementations are ineffective at protecting the environment and represent a significant waste of money. Poorly conceived Best Management Practices (BMPs), even poorer installation techniques and untrained labor combine to create only the illusion of compliance—an illusion that can be quickly shattered by a regulatory compliance officer. At B Wise we ensure competent BMPs that are effective and cost efficient.

We’ve found that BMPs requiring lots of maintenance are responsible for the lackluster compliance that results from annoyance and frustration over ineffective and inefficient methods. When maintenance costs are tallied (and they’re usually not) such BMPs typically cost more over the length of the project than good ones would have—and because they’re most often in need of maintenance, they’re often the source of violations.

Good SWPPP implementations start with good BMPs and a commitment to innovation, as well as to compliance. We believe it’s important to stay on top of the latest techniques and methods — and the projects we serve reflect that belief. From BMPs designed to a standard of 99% erosion control effectiveness, to concrete washout systems that recycle waste liquids and solids — we apply innovation to solving SWPPP compliance problems.

New BMPs must meet these criteria in order to meet our standard for acceptable practices:

  • save money over the course of the project,
  • minimize maintenance nuisance and costs,
  • provide a better level of compliance than whatever was used previously.

BMP Installation and Maintenance

For well designed and properly installed BMPs, maintenance is not as onerous as it might otherwise be. We provide BMPs that raise compliance while lowering total cost of compliance. However, since there are no self-maintaining BMPs when maintenance is required, it typically consists of removing sediment deposits when they accumulate, minor adjustments and other mundane chores, which require no special skills. Maintenance like this is often cost-effectively handled by your own on-site labor. If on-site labor is not available, we’re ready, willing and able to do it for you.

Repairs, on the other hand, are best done by our team. They typically consist of replacing BMPs, or parts of BMPs that have been damaged or destroyed by subcontractors, construction traffic, or others. When repairs, replacements or additional BMPs are needed we’ll do the work to assure quality results.
